Grace Potter And The Nocturnals On World Cafe
December 17, 2010 ... Grace Potter And The Nocturnals On World Cafe
from NPR:
December 17, 2010
Authentic and inspiring, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals' rootsy
sound has won the band fans in cities all over the country.
Potter's soulful, bluesy voice draws frequent comparisons to
Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin, and the band has won plenty of
awards, from several Boston Music Awards
(Album of the Year and Best Female Vocalist of the Year)
to a Jammy for Best New Groove.
The group has now evolved into a strong quintet and broken
into the big time with a recent self-titled album. As Potter
notes, the process of making the record "was fluid and
effortless. In my mind, an album shouldn't be self-titled
unless it feels that way."

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - their story!
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are like a modern-day
version of Tina Turner stroking the microphone in a
spangled mini-dress while fronting the Rolling Stones
circa Sticky Fingers. The proof is there for all to hear on
the band’s third album for Hollywood Records, hitting
this spring, and marks an artistic breakthrough
for a vital young band caught in the act of fulfilling its
immense promise. Little wonder that Grace and her
cohorts have chosen to title it, directly and emphatically,
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.
“This record is the first time it’s really been us — the
first time we’ve all found each other and ourselves,”
says Potter with obvious excitement. “Everybody was
totally comfortable, everything we had was sitting right
in front of us, and it just poured out of us. The whole
thing was fluid and effortless.
In my mind, an album shouldn’t be self-titled unless
it feels that way.” “We were a homegrown Vermont
band for five years,” says Grace with a wicked smile.
“Now we’re a national act that does not want to be
fucked with.”
After pausing for dramatic (or comedic) effect, she
continues in a more serious vein. “With this record
we feel like we’re finally there, after a long struggle.
It’s like the song ‘Oasis,’ which is about slogging
through the desert feeling like you’re completely
lost, with no end to the road and very little hope.
I wrote it as advice to myself to keep on walking,
because in the middle of the desert there might
be an oasis. And that’s what we’ve actually found.”

Severe Thunderstorms of June 17, 2010
Supercell thunderstorms developed across southern Minnesota
during the afternoon of Thursday June 17th producing tornadoes
and large hail initially. These storms then developed a line of
damaging wind gusts that moved through parts of Rochester, MN
and eventually grew to produce strong to severe winds across much
of southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and into western Wisconsin
into the evening hours.
Tornado damage surveys in Dodge County, MN continue,
but an EF1 tornado was determined in northwest Rochester, MN
which occurred shortly after 900 p.m. CDT.

Aaron Rodgers must have pumped a fist upon this pick.
History shows that offensive tackles are one of the safest
position picks in the first round, and for a team that saw
its QB bounced on the turf 50 times last season, getting a
big-time talent in Bulaga represents reason to celebrate.

County Style Ribs SEARED, and ready for the roaster 04/11/2010
and the HEAT Goes On..........and the HEAT Goes On o/`o/`o/`o/`o/`o/`
In less than 20 minutes these country-style ribs were seared, and ready for the blue-speckled enamel roast pan to slow-roast to heavenly tenderness. I marinated the ribs in a mixture of apple cider
vinegar, garlic powder, and chili powder prior to hitting the cast iron grates. After searing I loaded the ribs into a lightly-greased (with olive oil), covered blue-speckled roaster, smothered the ribs
with finely-chopped sweet red pepper and onions (about 2 cups) &
added about 2 cups of thinned BBQ sauce of your choice
(I used Original KC masterpiece). I once again used apple cider
vinegar to THIN the BBQ sauce, and provide extra ZING and
tenderness to the meat. Into a pre-heated 325 degree oven for
2 (two) hours, basting & checking for done-ness only one at
about the 80 min. mark. FALL-OFF-THE-BONE-TENDERNESSHickory Chips added to the cast iron box on the right added good hickory flavor in just 20 minutes. Once again, I contend this grill is a "BEAST" with regards to sear-power (and shear power!) MEAT.....MEAT.....MEAT.....MEAT.......

All the features I coveted, and as beautiful inside as it is
on the outside. The rotisserie motor is almost completely
silent, and stronger than it looks. Notice the horizontal
back burner exclusively for use w/ the rotisserie spit.

This grill is a BEAST with regards to total grilling power.
Absolutely ZERO (0) flare-ups......nada, zip!

Broil King gets my 'squeal of approval' (I'm convinced!) The research paid off! This thing 'SMOKES' any Weber in my humble opinion!

Alice In Chains - 03/21/2010 - Roy Wilkins Auditorium- St Paul, MN

For the second time in 6 months I'm convinced that the
current line-up of Alice In Chains is more than 'for real'.
They are in fact, "very real" and perhaps, churning out
the most powerful music of their careers, despite the
tragic, and premature loss of one Layne Staley almost
eight years ago. This time around it was the last stop
of their current US leg in support of their 'Black Gives
Way To Blue' record. Previously in Sept 2009 they
played the legendary First Avenue in downtown
Minneapolis, melting the faces off a jammed-packed
house.
(NOTE:
w/regards to the Sept 09 performance: I have NEVER
been at a show before where those in attendance sang
back to the band like they did at this particular performance.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think so.)
Frontman William DuVall has not tried to replace Staley,
for nobody could do that. What he does bring is a huge
stage presence, killer voice, and guitar skills to the mix
in a very convincing way. He may not be as meteoric
a star as Staley, but he doesn't need to be. He's a nice
fit, and Alice In Chains is better off because of it. Dark
and compelling harmonies along with big riffs have
always been their calling card; it still is based on what
I heard last night.

I was once again blown away by Jerry Cantrell's
fretwork in this 2 hour show. Jerry is still the band's
current day *star*, however, the whole unit was
road-tested and tight on this nite,as you would expect.
Mike Inez on bass and Sean Kinney on drums may not
have done any stage diving into the pit on this night,
but there was no need to do so. Rock-solid perform-
ances in all regards!
The crowd was not subdued by any means, but maybe
not quite as crazy as the Sept 09 performance at First
Avenue. Maybe it was the larger hall that took the edge
off the crowd a bit on a late Sunday nite. That's the
perception I was struck with anyway. At times Cantrell
seemed like he had to coax reaction from the crowd.
Perhaps it was the newness of the songs, because they
did play a lot from the new record.

I thought the show was a nice mix of current material
and past hits. It kicked off with 'All Secrets Known'
from the current effort, until the encore finale' of 'Rooster'.
(3-song encore set)
'Check My Brain', 'Last Of My Kind', and their current
radio-track 'Your Decision' all included in the main set,
and rightly so! ('Last Of My Kind' my official new-fav)
Usual high points for me were 'Again', 'Them Bones',
'Would?', 'Angry Chair', the set-ending 'Man In The Box',
and the aforementioned 'Rooster' during the encore.

They're taking a short break and then jumping back
to the road in mid-April thru the end of May stateside,
onto Europe, and even Istanbul, Turkey during June
& July.
(see tour schedule )
The concert go'ers to RockFest in Cadott, WI
July 18th 2010 should be 'thrilled' to be rounding
out their 4-day annual fest with Alice In Chains.
Who knows, but maybe that's the act to get me
back to that hillside in the cow pasture!

MonteMontgomery SOUND CHECK - at Fitzgeralds - Berwyn, ILL
Recorded Friday March 5th 2010 at SOUND CHECK.
Berwyn, ILL, Fitzgeralds, now a regular stop whenever
Monte Montgomery rolls thru the midwest. No MN or
WI stops this time around, which is somewhat odd.
No road trip for me this time around. I'm happy to get
my 'fix' right here this time, as long as it doesn't become
a regular thing. I guess I can't complain. Monte brought
his fretboard magic right here to 'Med-City' last July.
ENJOY! ~~

Andrew Breitbart destroys Rachel Maddow at CPAC
This is awesome! Andrew Breitbart in an interview
with POLITICO on the sidelines of the Conservative
Political Action Conference, blasted Rachel Maddow
as an intellectually dishonest, left-wing propagandist
who personifies the shortcomings of an antiquated
media business model. Maddow, Breitbart said,
drastically distorted the arrest of one of the ACORN
filmmakers last month during an unrelated attempted
exposé of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.).
